The party plans to acquire 400,000 tractors for distribution across the country to modernise farming.
Arusha. UPDP presidential candidate, Mr Twalib Kadege, has pledged that, if elected in the 2025 General Election, the hand hoe will be eliminated.
The party plans to acquire 400,000 tractors for distribution across the country to modernise farming.
He also promised to address long-standing conflicts between farmers and livestock keepers by establishing dedicated zones, preventing interaction, and providing livestock keepers with appropriate infrastructure, including water ponds.
The candidate made the remarks during a campaign rally on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the Arusha Main Bus Terminal.
He said the party manifesto centres on economic empowerment, including helping farmers move beyond hand-hoe agriculture.
He stated that, if elected, Tanzanians would no longer rely on hand hoes. The 400,000 tractors will be distributed nationwide, farmers will have access to domestic and international markets, and factories will be established with specialists to train citizens in operating them.
“The hand hoe will be the last thing to break your back. We will bring 400,000 tractors, distribute them to citizens’ farms, provide support, develop markets, and contribute a small portion of the revenue to the government. We will also explore foreign markets, ensuring every Tanzanian understands their present and future,” he said.
On farmer-livestock keeper disputes, he said the manifesto provides a clear solution: separate zones for livestock keepers, away from farmers, equipped with necessary facilities.
"We will construct ponds and veterinary centres. These zones will not allow farmers to disturb livestock keepers, regardless of soil fertility. They will be exclusively for livestock, ensuring freedom to manage their animals," he said.
"Farmers will also remain separate. This arrangement will be legally enforced. Any livestock keeper encroaching on a farmer’s land will face the courts, with penalties including imprisonment if crops are damaged. I believe this will prevent disputes, and farmers violating the law will also face consequences," he added.
On other social initiatives, Mr Kadege promised housing for elderly citizens without homes and a monthly allowance of Sh500,000.
"We want shelters that serve as refuges for citizens. Elderly citizens will receive Sh500,000 per month. Our manifesto also pledges to build homes for those without accommodation so they can live comfortably like other Tanzanians, instead of begging on the streets," he said.
On Zanzibar, UPDP presidential candidate, Mr Hamad Mohamed Ibrahim, urged citizens to maintain peace while emphasising the importance of the Union.
He stated that the party would ensure continued growth in the Arusha region, particularly through tourism and infrastructure development.
"We must act honestly and patriotically. Let us value peace and remember that the Union fosters national loyalty. No one, including candidates from any party, should incite violence or give harmful instructions," he said.
"They are not our friends. I urge you not to trust those spreading harmful messages; they have no interest in the nation. Your vote matters, and if you abstain, you forfeit a fundamental right," he added.
On youth empowerment, he said the party would establish factories to create jobs and fund dowries for all young people.
"Any unmarried young Tanzanian will have their dowry paid by UPDP. Once the party assumes power, we will cover dowries. Engaged couples will also receive Sh5 million each to safeguard their marriage and ensure family harmony. Young people will no longer be left unsupported," he said
