TBS spokesperson Roida Andusamile, said the crackdown follows a notice issued last April that required bakery owners to consult the bureau so their entities can be certified.
“The response was so low despite there being many bakeries in the country,” Ms Andusamile noted.
The situation is dire, Ms Andusamile maintained, saying “Our survey in Tanga, Arusha, Dar es Salaam and Dodoma shows that many bakeries do not meet the set standards.”
TBS statistics show that only 15 bakeries meet the required quality standards. Six of them are in Dar, three in Arusha, two in Tanga, two in Kagera, one in Morogoro and one in Moshi. The exact number of bakeries in the country is not known but Dodoma alone has about 30.
Dodoma bakeries that were closed include Capital Bakery, Kizota Bakery and Mnasi Bakery which are all located within the municipality.
Lack of toilets was one of shortcomings noted. The closure of the bakeries is in accordance with the Standards Act No 2 of 2009 which sets guidelines for manufacturing foodstuffs and other commodities.
