Dar es Salaam. For golf enthusiasts, Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club course is a place to go today as it hosts a tournament featuring elite golfers from three clubs.

Reigning Uganda Open champion Angel Eaton is among 50 golfers expected to battle it out for top honours in the Weekly Fiddle championship, one of the major golf competitions in the country.

Organised by Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club, the one-day event will feature top golfers from Lugalo Golf Club, Morogoro and Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Clubs, according to the organising committee member, Akhil Yusufali.

Yusufali, also the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club golf captain, said yesterday that preparations for the 18-hole event were in place.

With a host of top golfers lined up for the anxiously awaited championship, the organisers promised to have an even more vibrant and exciting Weekly Fiddle golfing treat for both players and spectators.

“Golf fans should expect a major treat. Participating golfers will compete in the men’s and women’s categories,” said Yusufali.

“Fifty golfers have confirmed their participation in the championship. They are all in high spirits, each looking forward to make a mark in the tournament,” he said

Yusufali said that other prizes will go to Division A, B, C, ladies and guests in which top three winners will take home handsome awards.

Besides Eaton, the other golfers tipped to sparkle at the event include Aidan Nziku, Iddi Mzaki, Athumani Chiundu, Michael Makala, Pembe Kondo, Hamisi Ally, Mohamed Diwani Hiteshi Valambia,Vicky Nyenza and Adamu Ngamilo.

Also in the list are Joseph Tango, Dions Malinzi, Fatma Makame, Angel Eaton, Mohabe Nyirabu, Kishen Dhebar, Salvatory Salehe, Anil Chopra and Dimesh Mawji.

In an interview with The Citizen yesterday, Mawji, one of the golfers tipped to shine in the event, said he has what it takes to snatch the tittle today.

“I have been out of the course for quite a long time, but everything looks so well in practice. I have improved my swing, so I am looking forward to make a mark in the championship,” he said.

“I have worked hard on my putt, so I am confident that I will snatch the top honour in the men’s category,” he stressed.
