Dar es Salaam.  Equity Bank Tanzania is using golf and lifestyle experiences to deepen its engagement with affluent customers as competition for the high-net-worth individual (HNI) banking segment intensifies.

In a statement shared to the paper, the lender disclosed that it will sponsor the Equity Waitara Trophy 2026, scheduled for September 19th at TPDF Lugalo Golf Club in Dar es Salaam, bringing together golfers, business leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals for a tournament that combines sport, networking and lifestyle experiences.

The sponsorship forms part of Equity Bank Tanzania’s broader strategy of connecting premium banking services with the lifestyles and financial ambitions of affluent customers.

Through the initiative, the bank will showcase its premium banking proposition, including the Equity Mastercard World Elite Debit Card, alongside investment, asset financing, mortgage, insurance and regional banking solutions.

Head of Brand and Product Marketing at Equity Bank Tanzania, Ms Shumbana Walwa, said golf provided an opportunity for the bank to engage customers around a shared interest while building relationships beyond conventional banking services.

“Golf is more than a game; it is a lifestyle built around ambition, relationships, discipline and continuous growth,” Ms Walwa said.

“Through the Equity Waitara Trophy, we want to connect with Tanzania’s golf community through that shared passion and introduce experiences and solutions that can help them elevate both their game and their lives,” she added.

The annual Waitara Trophy honours retired General George Waitara, the founder of TPDF Lugalo Golf Club, and has become a fixture on Tanzania’s golfing calendar, attracting players and enthusiasts from different parts of the country.

Equity Bank Tanzania Head of Corporate Banking Christopher Mwakasege said the bank's premium proposition was increasingly being shaped around the broader financial needs of affluent customers rather than traditional transactional banking.

“Our customers’ ambitions extend beyond banking. They are building businesses, investing, travelling, acquiring assets and creating wealth for future generations,” Mr Mwakasege said.

“Our role is to understand that lifestyle and provide a personalised financial relationship that moves with their ambitions,” he added.

The Equity Mastercard World Elite Debit Card offers customers global payment capabilities alongside selected travel, lifestyle and insurance benefits, including access to participating airport lounges for eligible customers.

The bank said the card is complemented by its mobile and internet banking platforms, personalised relationship management and access to its regional banking network.

Customers in the premium segment can also access investment and advisory services, mortgages, asset financing, cash-secured facilities and insurance solutions, subject to eligibility and applicable terms.

The tournament comes as financial institutions increasingly seek to differentiate their services by combining conventional banking with lifestyle and wealth-management offerings targeting customers with higher disposable incomes and more complex financial needs.

For Equity Bank, the golf sponsorship also provides an avenue to bring together potential and existing customers in an environment that facilitates business networking and relationship building.

On tournament day, golfers and invited guests will participate in the competition while engaging with the bank’s relationship teams and learning about financial and investment solutions aligned with their personal and business objectives.

The bank said the initiative is also intended to support the development of golf in Tanzania while strengthening its relationship with customers through sport, networking and lifestyle experiences.
