Dar es Salaam. Journalists were yesterday challenged to promote the investment and business opportunities available in agriculture to help Tanzania to realise its dream of becoming a medium industrial economy.

The Chief Executive Officer of Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) Mr Geoffrey Kirenga said the media stands a better chance to inform and educate people on the existing opportunities in agriculture for the country’s growth and development.

SAGCOT is a public-private partnership mandated to develop commercial agriculture and catalyse an agricultural transformation in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands.

“Tanzania has plenty of agricultural potentials and opportunities compared to any of Eastern and Central African country,” he said at a seminar organized by the SAGCOT.

Agriculture is Tanzania’s economic mainstay accounting for about 25 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product.

However, the sector’s growth is lagging behind others. It’s growing below three per cent.
