Dar es Salaam. Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has asked religious leaders to encourage their followers to invest in the agriculture.

The PM said agriculture has not been prioritised by religious institutions.

He made the statement on Friday June 15, at the Idd Baraza held at the Mnazi Mmoja grounds in the city.

The event was also attended by clerics from Christian churches including Bishop Charles Gadi from Good News for All, Anthony Lusekelo of GRC Church, and Secretary of  Dar es Salaam Peace Committee Fr John Solomon.

“We do appreciate the role of religious institutions in improving social service delivery, you have invested in education, health and water, are our wish is to see you doing better, especially in the agriculture sector,” he said.

His statement comes just a day after the government tabled its expenditure plan for the year 2018/19; where agriculture sector is the country’s number one priority.

“Should you face any difficulty on implementing the projects, never hesitate to ask for our help, the government will always be there for you,” said Mr Majaliwa in an event where he was representing President John Magufuli.

He further called for unity among religious institutions, saying it was the key factor for the country’s peace and harmony.

For his part, the Muft of Tanzania Sheikh Abubakar Zubeir Bin Ally assured a total cooperation with the government, saying it was part of the effort to support the development of the country.

“Development comes where there is love, unity and harmony among the people and I assure you that we shall do the needful to achieve all the plans,” he said in his welcoming remarks.
