Dar es Salaam. Young Africans wound up their Caf Confederation Cup campaign on a low note after slumping to a 3-1 loss at the hands of DR Congo’s TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi yesterday.

The victory confirmed the Congolese heavyweights a top Group A finish with 13 points while Yanga settled for the bottom place with four points.

The Jangwani Street side made a bright start to the match with hopes of recording a historic win at Stade TP Mazembe, but they were shy in front of the goal.

TP Mazembe took the lead in the 28th minute through Jonathan Bolingi and held on to a slim lead until the halftime break.

After the recess, Yanga looked livelier, but they were punished by two-goal hero Rainford Kalaba in the 55th minute. The Zambian returned to haunt them in the 64th minute with superb finish. Yanga scored their consolation in the 75th minute through Amissi Tambwe.

In another Group A match, MO Bejaia of Algeria snuck into the semifinals with a slender 1-0 win over Medeama SC at the Stade de l’Unité Maghrébine in Beajaia.

The win saw both MO Bejaia and Medeama finish on eight points, but due to the Algerian side’s superior head-to-head results they went through to the semifinals in second place. It was an extremely tightly contested affair on the day with very few chances for either side in front of goal.

Yanga will return to Caf-organised competitions next year when they feature in the African Champions League courtesy of winning the domestic league last season.
