Dar es Salaam. A city-based insurance broker has designed a project that is tailor-made to fit the requirements of operators of motorcycle taxis, popularly known as bodabodas.

Acclavia Insurance Brokers targets to reach over 500 bodaboda riders in Dar es Salaam in its Boda Salama campaign.

Through Boda Salama project, a bodaboda rider, who gets a permanent disability by losing any of the body organs through the business, will be compensated with two motorcycles and Sh500,000 in cash.

The firm’s executive director, Mr Ancelimi Mushi, said in Dar es Salaam at the weekend that the idea to initiate the project was borne from a simple study conducted at the Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI).

“During the study, we came to realise that most bodaboda riders who get involved in road accidents have no insurance cover,” he told participants at a bodaboda festival.

The event was organized by a Bodaboda Association in Ilala District.

To be covered under the project, a Boda Salama member is required to contribute Sh56,000 per year, equivalent to only Sh4,000 per month.

In case the member dies through an accident, his/her next of kin will receive two motorcycles plus Sh1.5 million. In case he loses his wife in a motorbike accident, he will receive a Sh1 million compensation and in case he loses a child, the compensation goes down to Sh500,000.

MOI spokesperson, Mr Patrick Mvungi, said it was true that most of bodaboda riders who get admitted at the Institute have no insurance cover.

“One of the main challenges facing MOI is the fact that most of the implants for orthopedic-related treatments are expensive and are imported. The Institution has therefore been forced to incur extra expenses for patients who have no insurance cover,” he said.
