In response to the directive by President John Magufuli, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has started shifting its staff from the headquarters before demolition.

Recently, the Head of State ordered Tanesco Headquarters demolished to pave way for the construction of the Ubungo interchange. The Citizen witnessed Tanesco staff removing various office items including furniture, files and computers from the building.

These were then loaded onto Suma JKT vehicles outside ready to be moved to various state utilities’ regional offices in Dar es Salaam.

Tanesco’s Dar es Salaam regional offices are located in Ilala, Temeke and Kinondoni.

Security was tight at the scene as goods were loaded onto trucks.

Non-staff members were restricted from entering the building or getting close to it unless one had a special permit from the management.

Tanesco’s acting Communications manager Reila Muhaji confirmed to The Citizen yesterday that the management was in talks with Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) over a new structure where to shift its headquarters. “We’re today shifting some staff and office equipment. We’re yet to find a permanent building,” she said without revealing the number of workers who currently accommodated in the structure. She insisted that the move would in no way affect the firm’s operations.

Apart from the Tanesco building, part of the headquarters of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation will also be demolished to pave the way for the construction of the Sh188 billion interchange at Ubungo.
