Prisons labour to ease past Savio in RBA duel

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Prisons maintained their winning run in this year’s Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League (RBA) with 71-62 win against Savio in a highly-contested match on Saturday night at the National Indoor Stadium.

The match brought together two sides with identical game approach, but it was Prisons who enjoyed possession, particularly in the last two quarters.

Abel John and Emanuel Mwendo were the players Prisons banked on the most when it came to attacking and scoring.

The duo’s work ethic was enough to make the rest of the squad play with composure.

Prison scorers were Abel Linus, who had 21 points, Emanuel Mwendo with 13 points and Paulo Bwire with seven.

Joseph Kamisa scored 22 points to finish the top scorer for Savio. He was followed by Corneleus Mgaza with 12 points while Amin Mtambo had nine.

It was, however, Savio who made a bright start, commanding the proceedings with swift but accurate passes to take a 15-13 first quarter lead.

The second half was even more thrilling. Savio , looking unperturbed, pressed upfront relentlessly in search of points. After a tight battle, they managed to take the quarter 14-13.

In the third quarter, Prisons, led by Linus, started where they had left off as they took it 25-11.

Linus was as accurate as ever whenever he aimed at Savio hoop.

Savio coach Williamu Mziray conceded defeat, saying they lost to a better team.

He pointed out that they could not lost by such a margin had it not been for his players to squander many scoring chances.

“We lost to a better team, but we had our chances which we fluffed,” he said.

“Had my forwards been precise up front, we could have, perhaps, beaten them or forced a draw,” the coach added.
