  • National Assembly Speaker Job Ndugai has summoned Controller and Auditor General (CAG) Prof Mussa Assad before the Parliamentary Privileges, Ethics and Powers Committee to give the reasons of misusing his position when he was abroad.

Dodoma. Speaker of the National Assembly Job Ndugai has called on Controller and Auditor General (CAG) Prof Mussa Assad to voluntarily appear on January 21, 2019 before the Parliamentary Privileges, Ethics and Powers Committee.

Prof Assad is supposed to voluntarily appear before the committee and that any reluctance will prompt for his arrest.

Apart from the CAG, Kawe legislator Halima Mdee has also been summoned to appear before the same committee on the following day- January 22.

The decision was announced Monday on January 7, 2019 by Mr Ndugai when addressing a press conference here.

Speaking during the press conference, Mr Ndugai said Prof Assad embarrassed the parliament during his interview with BBC Swahili during his recent visit abroad when he referred the Tanzania parliament as weak.

“If it’s the issue of fabrication then the CAG and his office are the ones involved. You can’t speak badly of your country when you are outside the country. We can’t create a trust working environment in our country,” said Mr Ndungai.

Ndugai said he was agitated by what the CAG uttered, noting that he didn’t expect an educated person like him could speak such a word that tarnished the good image of the Parliament which is full of educated people in the country’s history.

Moreover, Mr Ndugai explained that Ms Mdee was supposed to appear before the same committee in order to point out the alleged weaknesses of Parliament.
