Sheikh Ponda released on bail after spending night in cell

The Cleric was interrogated after being accused of uttering seditious remarks during a press conference held on Wednesday October 11 in Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam. The Secretary of the Council of Islamic Organisations in Tanzania, Sheikh Issa Ponda has been released on bail.

He was released on Saturday October 14 after being under police custody since Friday October 13. He was arrested after he surrendered to Central Police Station in response to an order by Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander Lazaro Mambosasa.

The Cleric was interrogated after being accused of uttering seditious remarks during a press conference held on Wednesday October 11 in Dar es Salaam.

Spokesperson of the Council of Islamic Organisation in Tanzania Sheikh Rajabu Katimba told The Citizen that the cleric was released on condition that he will be reporting to the police.

According to Sheikh Ponda’s lawyer, Prof Abdallah Safari, his client might be charged in court on Monday over the claims.
