Firms can buy Internet services from us: TTCL

Dar es Salaam. Two companies have partnered to provide Internet services to their providers in Tanzania.

Such providers have been buying Internet services from outside Tanzania, making accessibility difficult and expensive. However, in a deal between the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Limited (TTCL) and Telecom Italy Sparkle such a situation will change.

TTCL chief marketing and sales officer Peter Ngota told The Citizen that the state-owned company in partnership with Telecom Italy Sparkle had launched a large-capacity IP Point of Presence a Tier 1 ( IP-PoP) in Tanzania.

It is the first in East Africa and second on the continent, he said. The IP-PoP will enhance Internet connectivity in Eastern and Southern Africa by offering faster connection speeds, improved reliability and cost-efficient connections.

“Currently, Tanzania-based companies and those from neighbouring countries have been purchasing expensively Internet services from other continents. The process also involves many procedures,” said Mr Ngota.

He said with the IP-PoP Tier 1 connectivity, customers would be closer to the content providers. “It’s high time wholesale customers, regional operators and Internet service providers utilised IP-PoP opportunities to transform their daily business operations,” he said.

Already Rock Telecom Limited of Uganda, Malawi Telecom Ltd and TTCL itself have been connected to IP-PoP.

Meanwhile, representatives of 200 communication companies are meeting in Dar es Salaam.

“This meeting is very crucial to market Tanzania available opportunities and open business potential through partnership between local and international companies,” said Six Telecoms Head of business development Said Mohamed Alli.

The Deputy Minister for Communication Science and Technology January Makamba said that the conference is crucial in discussing issues pertaining to development of the communication sector in the country and the continent at large.

“This is very crucial for development of the country’s communication sector. Tanzania is a crucial communication stakeholder across the East Africa region through the national ICT broadband backbone,” said Mr Makamba.

He said that the meeting comes at a right time as the government embarks in a third phase to expand the national ICT broadband backbone.

“We want to ensure that come next year the whole nation is connected to communication network,” said Mr Makamba.
