What you need to know:

He shares with Success what his work is all about, the challenges and career prospects for those interested in the field.

Wiseborn Makaka works as a freelance chemist with Illovo Distillery Tanzania Limited (IDTL), a branch of Kilombero Sugar Company at Kilimanjaro area in Kidatu, Morogoro.

He shares with Success what his work is all about, the challenges and career prospects for those interested in the field.

What does a freelance chemist do?

A freelance chemist provides consultancy services and training in the field. He/she can also conduct seminars to discuss problems related to the field. A freelance chemist can provide advice on how to find work in the field.

Is it easy to find part time work as a chemist?

It is very difficult to be a freelance chemist in Tanzania because the market is not good and sponsorships are rare. This job requires someone to be very knowledgeable and up to date. It also requires capital.

Why did you choose to be a free-lancer?

I am enjoying it as it is very easy to develop my career this way. This is because it gives me the opportunity to acquire more knowledge and information by doing research and learning new things. Apart from this, I love chemistry because it provides solutions to people’s problems.

Self-marketing is a big part of any freelancer’s job. How do you do it?

The environment in Tanzania is not conducive enough due to poor government support. The people too are not supportive.

How does one start such a career?

You need to have a science background from secondary school where you have to specialise in science subjects. I personally specialised in chemistry at university and I can assure you science is fun.

From there you need to follow the law to get the principles and regulations. You also need capital to invest in the business.

How much are you earning per month on average?

I can say I get nothing from my work because it’s like I do volunteer work. People come for consultation but pay nothing.

Is the number of self-employed chemists on the rise in Tanzania? Why?

No, it is not on the rise at all because most students hate science subjects. Because of this, there are very few people who specialise in chemistry. The less attractive market also puts many people off, plus the fact that there is little support from the society in general.

Where can one study chemistry?

You can study chemistry at the University of Dar es Salaam and in many other private institutions. I did my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of Dar es Salaam.

Any future plans?

I plan to have my own office in two years, which will make my work easier.

I will work closely with the media. I will also conduct seminars and make publications.
