What you need to know:
- The recent revelation by Nando that he contracted an STI brings into question whether the contestants are aware of such dangers
The eighth edition of reality TV show Big Brother Africa is way past its half mark with contestants already reduced to 12 with a possibility of one leaving the house this weekend.
Tanzania’s lack is still running strong with both Nando and Feza featuring as potential money spinners after avoiding eviction for the past eight weeks.
But as that side of affairs seem to be on quite a smooth ride some odds have began to rare their ugly heads on the show with Nando in particular coming into the spotlight for apparently unhealthy reasons.
As we have witnessed from the beginning of The Chase, romance has been up in the air and cupid has struck several Chasemates leaving them with no choice but to follow their heartbeats.
The edition was a collection of some self-styled players and womanisers like Bolt who confessed that he generally liked women and our own Nando who wanted more girls in the House.
Uganda’s LK4 paired with South Africa’s Koketso, Sierra Leone’s Bolt chased Ethiopia’s Betty, Nando with Selly, Oneal zero grazing around Feza, Elikeem with Zimbabwe’s Pokello who got famous for a sex tape she released before going to the House. Others like Hakeem went to a level that only Mwisho Mwampamba reached by proposing to his flame Cleo, that was before a mock wedding featured our Feza with the Tswana dude then Angelo got cozy with Beverly.
This house has had the biggest number of hook ups in Big Brother Africa’s entire history and it promises to get even hotter as days go by.
And as most pundits say, the romance has done a great deal to quell tempers because unlike the previous three editions where violence reigned supreme, we are yet to experience one this term.
Hook-ups are not new in the BBA ever since Gaetano and Abby got under the sheets in the house in the inaugural edition of the show in 2003 and Richard picked on in the second edition with Tatiana.
The bombshell
However, as viewers warmed up to more romance and dates in the House, a bombshell was last week dropped after Nando claimed that Selly had infected him with an STI after their cozy moments on Day 27.
Nando had stuck to his game, he didn’t want anything permanent and as a result the next morning he was treating Selly like nothing had transpired.
A liaison, which according to Nando, was on a no strings attached basis had left the Tanzanian housemate being treated of Chlamydia.
Nando made this revelation to fellow housemate Bimp last week claiming that he was now being treated for Chlamydia, an STI which was transmitted to him by Selly.
“You know I hate that . . . (Selly)! I’m bleeping frustrated because that . . . gave me an STD. That’s why my blood pressure was high yesterday,” he told Bimp.
According to Nando, on that night he wanted to use as a condom, but the Ghanaian insisted on having raw sex, so he allegedly had unprotected sex with her, completely unaware he would contract any disease.
But interestingly Selly, who was evicted from the House, claims she never had sex with Nando in the house.
“I really do not know what Nando is talking about. I never had sex with him, all we did was to make out,” she said.
“I am waiting for Nando to leave the House and explain how and where he got the STI because I really don’t know how that could have happened,” a disgruntled Selly told a Ghanaian newspaper.
There is, however, no medical evidence yet that Nando contracted the infection from Selly.
But as Selly continues to hold her side of the story there is a video, which was circulated on the Internet showing the two kissing passionately in bed with their hands all over each other with one thing leading to another.
Selly maintains that she will take appropriate actions after Nando leaves the House and it is not clear whether her boyfriend in Ghana has taken her back.
Safety
The auditions of the BBA is a highly secret procedure that to date no one can tell what the show’s producers really look out for in the contestants.
Is it the looks, the humour, the physique or the social status, nobody seems to understands and even the finalists are usually a highly guarded secret that is only released on the .
However, according to sources close to Endermol, as part of the entry requirements the contestants are required to undergo a thorough medical examination.
“As far as I understand the prospective contestants under a medical exam which includes tests for infections like HIV and other diseases,” says the source. The source adds that while at the House the contestants are supplied with condoms just like in any other situation and therefore, it is upon the contestant’s own will to use or not to use protection.
What is Chlymadia?
Chlamydia, or chlamydial infection, is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a bacterium that only infects human beings. But many people usually think of it as an infection caused by any species of the Chlamydiaceae bacterial family. Chlamydia is a common infectious cause of genital and eye diseases in humans. It is the leading bacterial STI worldwide.
According to medical sources women under the age of 25 who are sexually active have a 10 per cent chance of getting infected. The peak age range for male infection risk is 20 to 30 years.
Some people refer to Chlamydia as a silent disease because there are rarely any noticeable symptoms initially. Experts say that approximately 50 per cent of infected men and 70 per cent of infected women will have no symptoms at all. Others will have such minor symptoms that the infection goes unnoticed.
