Luanda. Angola's state-owned energy company Sonangol has announced a positive breakthrough at its Katambi-2 appraisal well offshore the country, confirming the presence of high-quality hydrocarbon reservoirs that could bolster future oil and gas production.
The company, alongside Angola's National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG), said the appraisal well successfully intersected two productive intervals, confirming the quality of the reservoirs in the offshore Katambi field.
The findings will support further evaluation of the field's commercial viability and future development plans.
The Katambi-2 well forms part of Sonangol's appraisal programme to assess the extent of hydrocarbons discovered in the frontier basin.
Drilling began earlier this year as the company stepped up offshore exploration to attract fresh investment into Angola's upstream energy sector.
The successful appraisal comes as Angola seeks to reverse declining crude oil output by expanding exploration and bringing new discoveries into production.
The government has prioritised offshore projects as part of efforts to maintain the country's position among Africa's leading oil producers.
Industry analysts say the encouraging results are expected to boost confidence in the Katambi development and strengthen Angola's drive to unlock additional oil and gas reserves through continued exploration and appraisal activities.
