Man in court for allegedly failing to pay Sh21 million Serena Hotel bill

Dar es Salaam. A resident of Goba Kulangwa in Dar es Salaam, Denis Mfumbulwa, 44, has been brought before the Kariakoo Primary Court facing charges of obtaining food and accommodation fraudulently at the Serena Hotel.

The accused is alleged to have obtained food and accommodation worth Sh21.4 million without payment.

Mfumbulwa appeared in court on May 12, 2024, and his charge was read by the court clerk, Aurelia Bahati, in the presence of Resident Magistrate Gladness Njau.

The charge claims that the accused is alleged to have, at different times from March 6, 2022, to March 28, 2024, at the Serena Hotel located on Ohio Street, Ilala District, obtained food and accommodation worth Sh21,491,866.97 without payment.

It is alleged that after getting the services, the accused disappeared to an unknown location.

Clerk Bahati alleged that the accused committed the offense, knowing that the act was contrary to the law.

After reading his charge, Mfumbulwa pleaded not guilty and requested bail.

Magistrate Njau imposed bail conditions, which include having two sureties with letters of identification, one of whom must sign a bond of Sh10 million.

Mfumbulwa failed to meet the bail conditions and was thus remanded in custody.

Magistrate Njau adjourned the case until May 15 for the accused to be served with a preliminary hearing.
