Declare allowances, JPM told

What you need to know:

  • President John Magufuli recently declared that he is paid a salary of Sh9.5 million a month

Lindi. Chadema Women’s wing leader Halima Mdee, has called upon President John Magufuli to declare his allowances and privileges so that Tanzanians could know the actual amount he gets.

Ms Mdee, an outspoken politician who is also the Kawe MP, threw the challenge yesterday when addressing residents of Mtama constituency at Sokoni grounds in Lindi Region. “Recently, the President declared that his salary is Sh9.5 million, but he needs to tell us about his daily allowances so that every Tanzanian could be aware of the full amount he gets instead of misleading the people,” Ms Mdee said.

She added that MPs were receiving a salary of Sh3 million each, excluding various allowances.

“As MPs, our salary slips read Sh3 million each, but when it is combined with allowances and cash from duty roles, it reaches Sh10 million. So the President should also tell us about his allowances,” Ms Mdee stressed. Ndanda MP Cecil Mwambe said Mtama had no representative to speak about their problems, especially on cashew farming, as their lawmaker Nape Nnauye cannot not be expected to take the government to task on their behalf.

“There is a cashew problem here, but the MP has failed to speak about it. So you’ll not solve your challenges for a period of five years,” Mwambe said.

The Bavicha chairperson is visiting Lindi and Mtwara constituencies to open new Chadema branches and increase the number of women to the party.
