India launches global initiative to protect big cats

In a major international event held on 9th April 2023, at Mysuru in Karnataka State of India, to commemorate 50 years of Project Tiger, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi launched the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) for conservation of seven big cats namely Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar and Puma harbouring the planet.

The alliance aims to reach out to 97 range countries covering the natural habitats of Tiger, Lion, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar, and Cheetah. IBCA would further strengthen global cooperation and efforts to conserve the wild denizens, especially the big cats.

Under this initiative India has committed to finance $100 million for conservation of big cats over a period of 5 years.

A number of countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and Nigeria from Africa sent senior representatives for this event. Delegations from Malaysia, Mongolia, Suriname, Bhutan, Armenia, Nepal, Cambodia and Bangledesh also participated in the event. 

Tanzanian delegation was led by Anderson Gukwi Mutatembwa, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

Most of the participant countries announced their intention of joining the initiative.
