A brave rise: ‘Mwanamke Shujaa’ empowers women in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam.  Beyond the bustling streets, a revolution simmers in Tanzania's heart. The heroes? Not politicians, but courageous women vendors, seizing control of their economic destinies in the food sector.

This triumph is the Mwanamke Shujaa campaign, a beacon of empowerment for Tanzanian women.

Mwanamke Shujaa, Swahili for "A Brave Woman," is a transformative initiative by Coca-Cola Kwanza, alongside Oryx Gas and the Institute of Social Work (ISW).

It aims to foster economic inclusion, particularly for women, through a holistic blend of education, employability, and entrepreneurship training.

This year, the campaign reached a remarkable milestone – empowering over 1,600 women vendors, marking a significant leap towards gender equality and sustainable development.

"Jiamini, Jithamini, Jijenge" – the campaign's powerful slogan translates to "believe cin yourself, value yourself, build yourself."

By enabling women to reap economic rewards from their community contributions, Mwanamke Shujaa embodies Coca-Cola Kwanza's unwavering commitment to women's economic empowerment.

Equipped with tools like 15kg gas cylinders, two-plate gas cookers, aprons, and cooking tables, each woman received not just resources but symbols of their independence and entrepreneurial spirit.

Mrs. Fatuma Ahmed Salehe from Korogwe stands as a testament to the campaign's impact. She speaks of her business's significant growth, highlighting the acquired entrepreneurial skills and the efficiency brought by modern cooking tools. "Now," she says, "I serve more customers in less time, increasing my income."

Salum Nassor, Coca-Cola Kwanza's Director of Public Affairs, Communication and Sustainability, applauds the campaign's success, reiterating the company's commitment to shared opportunities for businesses and communities.

Their growth strategy prioritizes inclusive opportunities for communities, women, youth, and people with disabilities. Looking ahead, he reveals plans to expand their reach in other sectors in 2024.

Unguu Sulay, Managing Director of Coca-Cola Kwanza, reaffirms their dedication to shaping a brighter future for communities. "We are thrilled to contribute to women's economic inclusion through educational, employability, and entrepreneurial programmes," he states.

Oryx Gas, through its Managing Director Mr. Benoit Araman, echoes their commitment to this noble cause. He emphasizes their mission to support enterprises and society, boosting the economy, gas usage, and environmental preservation.

Mwanamke Shujaa transcends mere programme status. It's a transformative, indispensable strategy, consistently and resolutely addressing the evolving needs of women's entrepreneurship, empowering them to rise with courage and claim their place in Tanzania's economic landscape.
