MCL appoints Mpoki Thomson as its new Executive Editor

Dar es Salaam. Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) has appointed Mpoki Thomson as its Executive Editor, marking a major step in the company’s ongoing transformation towards a digitally driven, community-centred newsroom.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by MCL’s Managing Director, Rosalynn Mndolwa-Mworia, who said the appointment aligns with the company’s vision to lead innovation in the Tanzanian media landscape with a strong focus on digital-first journalism.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mpoki Thomson as Executive Editor of Mwananchi Communications Limited—a key milestone in our journey to reimagine journalism for the digital era,” Rosalynn said in the statement.

Mr Mpoki began his journalism career in 2010 as the editor of Bang magazine under Relim Entertainment. “With over a decade of experience in both print and digital media, he brings to the role a strong editorial acumen, creative storytelling skills, and a forward-thinking approach to news.”

During his tenure as Managing Editor of The Citizen, Mr Mpoki led strategic editorial changes, focusing on audience-driven content, quality journalism, and the integration of emerging technologies.

“His legal and journalistic background, combined with global media training in leadership and engagement, makes him uniquely equipped to lead this next chapter,” the appointment statement further reads.

In his new role, he will spearhead editorial innovation across MCL’s platforms, with a mandate to accelerate the transition to digital journalism.

His focus will include enhancing audience engagement, exploring new revenue opportunities, and fostering creativity in content delivery through data-driven storytelling and modern formats tailored to today’s audiences.

He will also be tasked with upholding editorial excellence and accountability, while nurturing a dynamic newsroom culture rooted in innovation, adaptability, and continuous learning amid a rapidly evolving media environment.
