Mtwara. Immigration services division in Mtwara Region has arrested 360 foreign employees of Dangote cement factory for working without valid permits.
They were arrested this week in the ongoing crackdown announced by the government to round up illegal immigrants throughout the country.
The Mtwara regional immigration officer, Mr Zakayo Mchele, said here yesterday most of the arrested employees who had no residence and working permits were Chinese.
The cement factory, owned by African leading business tycoon, Nigerian Aliko Dangote, was inaugurated last year by former President Jakaya Kikwete.
Mchele said the immigration officials also arrested the general manager of the plant they identified as Vidya Digixt “because he was not cooperative.”
However, he said in the course of interrogations they realized that 177 of the arrested employees were in the process of applying for residence and work permits.
The Dangote cement plant in Mtwara with a capacity of producing three million metric tonnes of cement per annum.
The plant is part of the Dangote Company’s Africa expansion strategy and is the fourth in the series after Ethiopia, Zambia and Cameroun.
The Dangote cement plant created direct employment to 1,500 people and indirect employment to about 9,000 people.
