Mbeya. A first-year law student at Mzumbe University’s Mbeya campus, Ms Shairose Mabula, has allegedly been killed after being set on fire by unknown assailants, prompting police to launch a forensic investigation to identify those responsible.

Shock and confusion gripped Mbeya on Thursday, September 18, 2025, after news of the student’s death went viral on social media, raising concerns about the mysterious circumstances of her killing.

A statement issued by Mbeya Regional Police on Sunday, September 14, 2025, the victim’s father, Mr Michael Mabula, reported his daughter missing at the Central Police Station.

Following the report, police opened a case file and began tracing her whereabouts.

On Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at around 11:00 p.m., officers received information about a fire incident on Moravian Street, Isyesye Ward. They rushed to the scene and found a burning shack.

“Upon investigation, the charred remains of an unidentified female were recovered. The body was taken to Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation,” part of the statement reads.

“Subsequent medical examination and family confirmation identified the body as that of Shairose Mabula, who had earlier been reported missing. Police are continuing scientific investigations to conclusively verify the remains and apprehend those responsible,” the statement adds.

Police also appealed to the public to provide any information that could aid in the arrest of suspects, while condemning mob justice and acts of lawlessness that endanger society.

Father’s account

Speaking at his home in Uzunguni, Mbeya, Dr Mabula Mahande said he had received distressing calls from the kidnappers, who claimed they were taking his daughter to Tabora.

“I asked them what the problem was, but they promised to explain later. Around 11:00 p.m., a Good Samaritan called to report a fire at Nanenane. Firefighters rushed to the scene and, while extinguishing the blaze, they discovered a burning body,” he said.

Local leaders speak

Uzunguni Street chairperson, Mr Kelvin Mela, confirmed that he had worked closely with the victim’s father from the time she was reported missing until her death was confirmed.

“Since her disappearance, her father kept me informed. Together, we filed reports of her abduction until it was later confirmed that she had been found dead. At the time, her father had travelled,” said Mela.

Friends in mourning

One of her classmates on field training at the Mbeya Primary Court, Mr Ezekiel Mwakalebela, described the late Shairose as humble and cooperative.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened. She was humble, friendly, and cooperative during our fieldwork at the Primary Court. Her death has left us devastated,” said Mr Mwakalebela.
