  • The inclusion of the Northern Zone Golf Championship adds value to TGU’S calendar of events. The 54-hole stroke play event is scheduled to tee off from February 9 to 11 at the TPC Golf Course, also known as TPC Golf Club.

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania golfers have a reason to smile following the Northern Golf Championship now being recognised as one of the events to rank golfers by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

According to Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) chairman Gilman Kasiga, Tanzania previously had six golf competitions recognized by WAGR.

The events include the Tanzania Open, TPC Open, Mufindi Open, Morogoro Open, Arusha Gymkhana Open, Tanzania Amateur Stroke Play, and Lugalo Open.

Kasiga explained that the events are open to all golfers worldwide and give points that aim to improve their ranking statuses.

The inclusion of the Northern Zone Golf Championship adds value to TGU’S calendar of events. The 54-hole stroke play event is scheduled to tee off from February 9 to 11 at the TPC Golf Course, also known as TPC Golf Club.

The Northern Zone Golf Championship’s top seven gross winners will receive lucrative cash prizes, with the overall winner taking home Sh1 million. Therefore, all players with handicaps of 9 or below, both men and women whose handicaps are recognized by the Handicaps Network Africa (HNA) or any other globally recognized system, are welcome to compete in this open tournament.

Additionally, there will be competitions for other groups, namely Divisions B, C, juniors, and ladies who will compete for Net in the 36 holes. Registration is online and will close on February 6.

“We have decided to set February 6 as the deadline in order to facilitate the event’s draw and set up the Golfbox live scoring system,” said TPC Open coordinator Jafari Ally.

The calendar also indicates that the Morogoro Open will tee off on March 8 to 10 at the Morogoro Gymkhana Golf Course, while the Lugalo Open will be staged from April 5 to 7 at the TPDF Lugalo Golf Course in Dar es Salaam, and the TPC Open will tee off on May 3 to 5 at the TPC Golf Course in Kilimanjaro.

Also listed is the Arusha Open, scheduled for June 7 to 9, and the Tanzania Amateur Stroke Play set for October 5 to 6 at the TPC Golf Course. The Tanzania Open is slated for November 21 to 24 at the Kili Golf Course in Arusha.

"This represents an extra mile for golf development in the country, where our amateur golfers can earn points to improve their statuses in world rankings.

“It's also open to golfers worldwide, who, if victorious, will earn points in the world rankings. I encourage all golfers to compete in these events in order to be included in the world rankings," said Kasiga.

He said TGU is committed to developing the game of golf in the country including making efforts in attracting sponsors.

"I believe all events will be held with high standards and secure sponsors. I urge golfers to train hard and compete in all the tournaments," he added.
