Dar es Salaam. Azam FC midfielder Salum Abubakar alias Sure Boy hopes that his team will cruise into the advanced stages of the CAF Confederation Cup this year.

Sure Boy’s confidence stems from Azam’s display in Johannesburg on Saturday where they crushed Bidvest Wits 3-0 in the first round, first leg tie.

“We played very well against the Wits and managed to take a big advantage ahead of the second leg clash,” said the midfield maestro who also scored against the Wits.

“We played as a team; headed instructions from the coach (Stewart Hall) and thanks God that I am among the scorers. It is my belief that this is our glorious year. We have a good team that can go all the way to the last hurdle,”” he said.

The clubs meet again on Sunday at the Azam Complex with the hosts on course to face star-studded Tunisian outfit Esperance in the next qualifying round.

Esperance triumphed 2-0 away to shock preliminary-round winners Renaissance of Chad through goals from Taha Yassine Khenissi and Ghailane Chaalali in N’Djamena.

The Tunis-based club have lifted every Caf trophy except the Confederation Cup, which replaced the African Cup Winners Cup and Caf Cup competitions 12 years ago.
