Tanzania’s women’s national team crowned CECAFA champions after defeating Kenya

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s national women’s football team, Twiga Stars, has clinched the CECAFA Women’s Championship title after defeating Kenya 1–0 in the final match played on Saturday at 4:00 PM at Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Twiga Stars lifted the trophy in dominant fashion, finishing the tournament without conceding a single goal while scoring 13 in four matches—an outstanding record.
The lone goal that secured the championship came in the 49th minute through an own goal by Kenya’s Enez Mango, who was attempting to clear a dangerous ball inside the box.
The victory placed Twiga Stars at the top of the table with 12 points from four matches, securing the title. Kenya finished second, while Uganda claimed third place.
Twiga Stars opened their campaign with a 4–0 win over South Sudan, followed by a 6–0 triumph against Burundi. They went on to beat Uganda 2–0 before sealing their campaign with the win over Kenya.
Kenya’s head coach, Berdine Odemba, congratulated Tanzania and said the match served as a good benchmark for her team.
“I congratulate Tanzania on the win. They gave us strong competition and clearly look prepared for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations. For us, the match highlighted areas we need to improve ahead of the WAFCON qualifiers,” said Odemba.
Twiga Stars head coach, Bakari Shime, said the tournament had been highly beneficial to his squad.
“We’ve shown quality and demonstrated readiness. I also commend Kenya—they provided a good challenge,” said Shime.
