Dar es Salaam. Former national rally champion Randeep Birdi made a spectacular return to the limelight as he won the inaugural Mt Uluguru Rally, the final round of this year’s National Rally, held yesterday in Morogoro Region.

With Arusha veteran driver Gerard Miller and Dar es Salaam’s Dharam Pandya breathing heavily behind him, Birdi, in a new Mitsubishi Evo 9, made it to the podium ahead of the rest, finishing two minutes ahead of his closest challenger.

“It was a good, but highly challenging race.

I hope to have a better season in 2015,” the excited Birdi, who clocked one hour, 21 minutes and 13 seconds after a dramatic chase, said.

Miller, who won the penultimate round two months earlier, claimed the second position also in Mitsubishi Evo after spending one hour, 23 minutes and 38 seconds.

Mzizima Club driver Dharam Pandya, finished third overall in Mitsubishi Evo 9 ahead of the fourth-placed Rajbir Singh from Arusha.

Twelve out of 17 cars that attended a flag off yesterday morning, managed to finish the 350km thriller.

Fifth overall was another Mzizima club driver Kirit Pandya, who finished ahead of Kelvin Taylor in Subaru Legacy.

Others who made it to the podium include Gurpal Singh, Mohamed Digala, Frank Taylor, Sonnu Tufail and Vishal Solanki.

Morogoro has resumed rallying after over five years of inactivity.
