Dar es Salaam. Tanzania now only remains with Sarah Ramadhan in the Olympic qualifications, Athletics Tanzania (AT) President, Anthony Mtaka has said.

Speaking with The Citizen on Sunday, Mtaka said the body fielded two runners, Sarah and Natalia Elisante.

The latter failed to win the qualifying marks and as per rules and regulations, she will not feature again in the qualifications.

Mtaka said the rules and regulations do not allow Natalia to feature in the qualifications as she needs more than three month in order to feature again in the marathon.

“We now focus only on Sarah and hopefully she will compete in South Africa Senior Championship scheduled to take place on July 1. If she will fail, it will mark the end of female runners in the Olympic Games, this year, we have to pray for that,” said AT boss.

Mtaka also said that AT also depends on the national athletics championship to select middle runners ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The national athletics championship has been scheduled to take place on June 11 and 12 at the National Stadium.

He said that South African championship is dubbed as Olympic Qualifiers and they want to send the runners who will shine in the indoor race.

He said so far they have three runners who have qualified for Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in August and now they are concentrating on middle distance runners.

“We have secured time A in marathon through Alphonce Felix, Saidi Makula and Fabiano Joseph, we have chance in women and marathon, but other middle distant races are yet to secure qualifying marks, qualifications for that is until in mid-July,” he said.
