Dar es Salaam. Wholesale prices of goats and sheep have risen over the last two months, signaling the possible rise in meat prices.

The Citizen has established that despite increased goats and sheep supplies in various city markets including Vingunguti and Pugu abattoirs, their wholesale prices have gone up.

Wholesalers attributed the increase to high demands as Muslims prepare for Eid–ul-Azha to be marked mid this week.

The market survey has shown that wholesale prices for goats increased to Sh80,000 and Sh150,000 yesterday, depending on the size of the animal from Sh60,000 and Sh100,000 recorded in mid June.

At the same time, sheep prices dramatically increased to between Sh70,000 and Sh140,000 from Sh60,000 and Sh90,000 recorded two months ago.

Wholesalers attributed the price increase to higher demands as well as high transport costs.

Goat and Sheep wholesaler at Vingunguti Darajani Musa Abubakar said there are many check points on road, which makes triggers the rise in transport costs.

“Due to higher cost of transport, we are forced to rise wholesale prices slightly,” he said.

Mr Athumani Kiiza, a consumer of goat, blamed wholesalers for taking advantage of the Eid to hike prices.

“The city market for goat and sheep is much undefined especially in days near religious festivals. Goat and sheep meats are mostly served during festivities that include Eid, Christmas and Easter,” he said.
