No one entitled to Sh1bn Mo award

  • The Sh1 billion one billion shillings award announced by the family of Mohammed Dewji ended up untaken by anyone, after the father of the abducted billionaire said his son was the first to tip the family over his release.

Dar es Salaam. Nobody is entitled to the Sh1 billion award promised by the family of Mr Mohammed Dewji,who was released on Saturday after being abducted nine days earlier.

His family promised the award to anyone who would volunteer information that would have led to his safe return.

Mo’s father, Mr Gulam Dewji, confirmed to The Citizen yesterday that there was no one who tipped the family on his son’s whereabouts.

“There is no person who has volunteered any useful information to us. He was released by his abductors, so nobody is entitled to the award,” he said.

The award was announced by family spokesman Azim Dewji, five days after Mo was abducted by people claimed to be foreign nationals after arriving at Colosseum Hotel and Fitness Club for his morning workout.

Asked about people who broke the news of Mo’s release through social media, Mr Dewji said the first person to call him was his son himself.

“I was the first person to know the details of the status of the release of my son...there isn’t anyone who can claim that they tipped us off,” he said.

Mr Mohammed Dewji, who once declared by Forbes as one of the African youngest billionaire- below age of 40, was abducted by gunmen at when he went for routine exercises at the Colesseum Hotel gym, located at Masaki area.

Earlier reports said that Mr Mohammed was abducted by foreign nationals as the vehicle used to abduct were later identified by police authority as registered in foreign countries.

On Friday last week, through a press conference, the Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro displayed the photos of a vehicle, saying it was the one used to abduct Mr Mohammed Dewji as they were investigating further after being given preliminary details of an incident.

Following the IGP press conference, Mr Mohammed was found dumped alive at Gymkana grounds in Dar es Salaam on Saturday morning. The abductors also dumped the vehicle used during abduction, which was also found with pistols, an AK 47 gun and dozens of ammunition.
