The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has collected Sh34.09 billion property tax from 30 districts councils since it was mandated to do so by the government.

The figure was revealed yesterday by Finance and Planning deputy minister Ashantu Kijaji. She was responding to Mr Wilfred Lwakatare (Bukoba Rural- Chadema), who wanted to know what achievements the government had so far attained from its decision to mandate TRA to start collecting property tax and not district councils.

Ms Kijaji said, while in 2015/16 district councils collected Sh28 billion only, in 2016/17 TRA’s collection jumped to Sh34.09 billion, which was a big achievement.

“The improvement is due to effective mechanism by TRA to collect the said taxes more than the way the districts councils used to,” she added.
