Two held for alleged theft at Mengi’s funeral

Hai. Police in Kilimanjaro Region are holding two people accused of stealing various properties belonging to mourners, who attended the funeral ceremony of IPP Group of Companies executive chairman Reginald Mengi ,who passed away on May 2, this year.

In the incident that occurred at Machame Nkuu, Mr Mengi’s home village, where he was buried on Thursday, the thieves made away with a gold necklaces, laptops and an unspecified amount of money.

The incident occurred hardly a day after the body of the late philanthropist was buried in his village on Thursday.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Hamis Iassah confirmed to The Citizen yesterday that a man and a woman were arrested in connection with the incident and were being interrogated.

RPC Issah said the theft was committed by the people who are alleged to be members of Mengi’s family who came from Dar es Salaam.

“It is true, some valuables from Mengi’s house were stolen. The thieves are not known yet. We are investigating. It could be anyone both from within and outside the family,” he said.

“There are mixed people here and the majority are not familiar with each other and as a result some entered the place where they were not stopped, and the theft occurred.”

“We are holding two people for interrogation,” he said

However, some of the people who were in the funeral that did not want their names mentioned, claimed that some of the people who were involved in the robbery were wearing the IPP tags

“All those who were arrested were wearing IPP tags, others were pretending to help here and there they had their own mission,” they said
