Bugando to benefit from expertise of 13 Cuban doctors

Mwanza. At least thirteen Cuban health experts are expected to join Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in a mission to boost health services at the facility.

The foreign doctors will base on nose and ears disorders, brain surgery, backbone and urinary tract systems.

These were revealed by BMC’s director Abel Makubi during a visit by the Cuban ambassador, Mr Lucas Polledo, inspecting some of the areas including residential quarters for the expected group of doctors.

“We are waiting for those doctors as promised. I believe this will add more value to both our staff here,” said the director. Shortage of experts has led to deaths of 437 expectant mothers during delivery between January and December of last year.

In a campaign to fight against the deaths of women in Shinyanga over the weekend,Lake Zone coordinator for reproductive health care Neema Mshana said there was still a big challenge despite the government’s intervention.

She cited some regions with high rate of expectant mothers are Mara, Geita, Simiyu, Kagera, Shinyanga and Mwanza. Fore his side, Shinyanga Region’s medical officer,Mr Rashid Mfaume, said death cases from pregnant mothers were on the decline to the support from various health stakeholders.
