VIDEO: International Food, Folks and Fun!

Many countries have food that identify with their culture, and as we approach the International Cultural Day, we thought it wise to have some fun with some of the food from these cultures.

The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is a United Nations–sanctioned international holiday for the promotion of diversity issues. 

With that, we decided to venture into some of the foods of the world that can be recognized…

Sushi is a Japanese dish of prepared rice, usually with some sugar and salt, accompanying a variety of ingredients, such as seafood, vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits.

Nachos is a Mexican dish from northern Mexico that consists of heated tortilla chips or totopos covered with melted cheese, often served as a snack or appetizer. More elaborate versions of the dish add other ingredients, and may be substantial enough to serve as a main dish.

Jerk is a style of cooking native to Jamaica, in which meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a hot spice mixture called Jamaican jerk spice. ... The meat is normally, but not limited to, chicken or pork, and the main ingredients of the spicy jerk marinade sauce are all spice and Scotch bonnet peppers.

Injera, is a sourdough-risen flatbread with a slightly spongy texture, originating from the Horn of Africa. Traditionally made out of teff flour, it is the national dish of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

A Quesadilla, or sometimes specifically a cheese quesadilla, is a Mexican dish and type of taco, consisting of a tortilla that is filled primarily with cheese, and sometimes meats, beans, vegetables, and spices, and then cooked on a griddle.

Mlenda is a plant of the genus Corchorus in the Malvaceae family . Leaves in Tanzania are eaten as vegetables and are cooked with a mixture of various plants like okra , vegetables and nuts. Great with ugali.

Biltong is a form of dried, cured meat that originated in Southern African countries. Various types of meat are used to produce it, ranging from beef and game meats to fillets of meat cut into strips following the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. 

Hummus is a Levantine dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas or other beans, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and garlic. It is popular in the Middle East and Mediterranean, as well as in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.
