Dar es Salaam. President John Magufuli said on Sunday, May 19, 2019 that he was aware of business people who take advantage of the Holy Month of Ramadhan to raise prices of goods, especially foodstuffs and warned them to stop forthwith.

He was speaking at the 20th edition of the Quran Recitation Contest which took place at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

He said it was a sin in the eyes of God and one cannot grow wealthy by taking advantage of people who were fasting.

β€œLet me use this opportunity to call on the relevant authorities to monitor this issue very closely,” said President Magufuli.

He also called upon members of other religious denominations and non-believers to continue collaborating with Muslims in the fulfillment of the Month of Ramadhan which is one of the five pillars of Islam.

"I pray to God to reward you for whatever you do in your fast. I am not fasting but at the end of the Holy Month, I will join you,” said the President.

In attendance at the event were former Presidents Jakaya Kikwete and Ally Hassan Mwinyi.

A contestant from Senegal won the contest and went home with Sh20 million plus a return ticket to the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The first and second runners up were from Nigeria and Zanzibar and they went home with Sh12 million and Sh7 million respectively.

Al-Hikma foundation organized the event.
