Tanzania’s former Home Affairs Minister cheats death as car hits donkeys

  • Dr Nchemba told journalists at the hospital yesterday that the accident occurred when his vehicle hit donkeys while on his way to Singida.

Dodoma. Former Home Affairs Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, cheated death earlier today (Wednesday, February 13, 2019), when the vehicle he was travelling in was involved in an accident at Migori area in Iringa.

Dr Nchemba told journalists at the hospital that the accident occurred when his vehicle hit donkeys while on his way to Singida.

“I was talking on the phone when suddenly, my driver issued an accident warning to me. I saw three donkeys crossing the road. One donkey managed to cross but the vehicle rammed into two of them,” he said.

He said he heard a loud bang and he knew at that moment that the accident was real.

“After that, there was smoke in the vehicle, suggesting that it would burn but good Samaritans came to our rescue and rushed us to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital,” he said, noting that he was received well and given utmost care.

His driver was not hurt during the accident.

Dr Nchemba, who is Member of Parliament (MP) for Iramba West (CCM) was travelling from Iringa to Dodoma, when his vehicle hit the zebras  at Migori, the Dodoma Regional Police Commander, Mr Gilles Murotto confirmed to The Citizen on Wednesday.

Pictures, showing Dr Mwigulu’s vehicle, went viral on social media on Wednesday, showing that it (the vehicle) was badly damaged on the passenger side where Dr Mwigulu was sitting.

Dr Mwigulu Nchemba was rushed to Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma.

The Citizen visited the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital premises on Wednesday and witnessed Dr Mwigulu undergoing some medical checkups. 

The Benjamin Mkapa Hosital director, Dr Alphonce Chandika said Dr Mwigulu was received at the hospital at 9:30am.

“When he came, he was complaining of some pains on his hip and right leg. We have conducted some tests using various machines including CT Scan, Ultrasound and X ray,” he said.
