Dodoma. The Chief Whip of the Official Opposition Camp and Singida East MP, Mr Tundu Lissu (Chadema) was on Monday evening arrested outside the National Assembly grounds and has been taken to Dar es Salaam allegedly to answer unspecified charges.
Leader of the Camp Freeman Mbowe (Hai-Chadema) told journalists that they are yet to establish why Mr Lissu was arrested, “It is true he was arrested and has been transported to Dar es Salaam. We have already contacted our lawyers and they are following up on the matter.”
Dodoma Police Commander Lazaro Mambosasa confirmed the arrest and said they had received directives from Dar es Salaam, “We have arrested him for crimes that he committed, and preparations to transport him are underway,” he said over the phone.
According to Mr Lissu’s driver Simon Makira, his boss was arrested at 5pm as he was exiting the parliamentary grounds, “Just as he got out of the gates he was approached by plain clothed police who said they had come to arrest him. He asked why they wanted to arrest him and whether they had a permit, t they didn’t show anything except for their identity cards and told him he had to appear in court Tuesday. He was then whisked into a vehicle.”
