The first Alliance Française in Tanzania was founded in 1961 in Dar es Salaam, followed later by Alliance Française of Arusha and the youngest Association Franco-Zanzibarite (AFZ) in Stonetown. Since then they have connected French and Tanzanian cultures and artists.
As for the more than 800 Alliances Françaises present in 132 countries around the world, the three French cultural centers in Tanzania promote the French language and francophone cultures and encourage cultural diversity by offering a stage to Tanzania cultural expressions.
The three centers welcome every year more than 500 Tanzanian students of different ages and backgrounds. Kids, teenagers, adults and professionals from the tourism industry or the diplomatic circles will find the solution that meets their expectations, schedule and financial capacity. Classes dedicated for companies willing to teach French to their employees are available during the whole year.
The range of cultural activities proposed by our Alliance Française network in Dar, Arusha and Zanzibar is wide, with hundreds of events, live music concerts, urban arts events, conferences or exhibitions organized annually. Artists from Tanzania, France or any other country are welcomed to take part in these activities promoting cross-cultural understanding.
Apart from offering trainings on language and cultural activities, Alliance Française centers offer a wide range of other services such as language proficiency testing under Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Used in Europe and on other continents, this testing enables students to gain a transparent and recognized certification of their ability to speak French, in order to work or study in a French speaking environment. They also offer translation services in English, Kiswahili and French fully recognized by the Tanzanian authorities due to its quality, reliability, standards and accuracy.
