Nairobi, Sunday. Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has announced plans to conduct a lifestyle audit of judges and magistrates in an effort to fight corruption in the judiciary.

The CJ revealed that he is pushing for the audit which will begin with the Supreme Court judges. Other judiciary employees will follow.

“I am pushing for a forensic lifestyle audit that will start with me and the Supreme Court (judges) and cascade down,” he said during an interview with the EastAfrican.

He however did not say when the exercise would kick off or whether the idea has been accepted widely.

And in order to dismantle cartels that perpetrate corruption in the corridors of justice, the CJ said employees who have worked in one court registry for more than 10 have been transferred. He said a committee, headed by Justice John Mwera, has also been established to help the judiciary reclaim its lost land and assets.

Dr Mutunga, who is also the president of the Supreme Court, said the judiciary had made tremendous progress in fighting corruption both in its judicial and the administrative wings. He said action has been taken against several judges, accountants, directors and others.
