Dar es Salaam. The ruling party CCM, has set July 28, 2025, as the new date for its Central Committee meeting, during which final decisions will be made on aspirants seeking the party’s nomination for parliamentary and local government positions.
The announcement was made on Saturday, July 19, by CCM’s Secretary for Ideology, Publicity and Training, Mr Amos Makala, during a media briefing in Dodoma.
According to Mr Makala, the Central Committee will vet and endorse a shortlist of candidates eligible to proceed to the party’s internal nomination process.
In this phase, CCM delegates will vote to select official flag-bearers for the upcoming elections.
“The Central Committee will determine which aspirants qualify to enter the next stage, where party delegates will cast their votes,” Mr Makala said.
The upcoming session follows the postponement of previously scheduled meetings of the Security and Ethics Committee and the Central Committee, which were initially set for July 18 and 19.
Mr Makala said the delay was necessitated by the unexpectedly high number of aspirants, which had extended the vetting and screening process.
“This adjustment ensures that all candidates are reviewed thoroughly and fairly in accordance with the party’s procedures,” he said.
CCM’s internal nomination process is a key milestone in its electoral calendar, shaping the party’s strategy and candidate line-up for parliamentary and councillorship contests across the country.
The outcomes of the July 28 meeting will be instrumental in determining the party’s preparedness and competitive edge as Tanzania heads into the next general election cycle.
CCM, which has dominated Tanzania’s political landscape since independence, views the internal vetting process as essential to maintaining party discipline and cohesion.
In previous elections, the party has used the process to filter candidates based on loyalty, public appeal, experience, and alignment with the party’s values.
Observers say the results of the Central Committee meeting will offer insight into CCM’s broader political direction and how it intends to position itself ahead of what is expected to be a closely watched election year.
