Shein sworn-in, vows to protect human rights

Dar es Salaam: Zanzibar president elect, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein was sworn in today to resume the helm of leadership in the Zanzibar archipelago.

During his address to the nation, he pledged to protect human rights, encourage accountability and equality without segregation.

The inauguration ceremony was  held at the Amaan Stadium in Unguja.

Dr Shein promised to form a government that will unite Zanzibar and ensure that the Union's foundations installed by the founders are protected without fear and favour.

Dr Shein was sworn in today following his landslide victory last Sunday when he garnered 299,982 votes equivalent to 91.4 per cent of all 328,327 valid votes casted during the election rerun.

The election rerun was organized after the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman; Jecha Salim Jecha annulled the December 25, 2015 election results claiming of surpassed irregularities.

The Chama Cha Wananchi (CUF) which jointly formed the Government of National Unity (GNU) with CCM in the 2010-2015 boycotted last year polls protesting annulment of results.

Today’s ceremony was attended by retired leaders of the Union and the Isle including the present union leaders; President John Magufuli, Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Prime Minister Majaliwa Kasim Majaliwa.
