Dar es Salaam. AngloGold Ashanti, through its subsidiary Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), has partnered with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) to support a week-long series of activities commemorating Africa Day 2025.
The activities will culminate in the 15th Annual Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture, scheduled to take place at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The theme for the lecture will be The State of the Continent: Reigniting the African Renaissance which aims to elevate awareness of Africa’s achievements and opportunities, generate knowledge through scholarly work and policy briefs, stimulate public engagement through media, enable collaboration among stakeholders, mobilise youth, and build platforms for lasting continental networks.
Since its inception, the Africa Day Lecture series has provided a platform for dialogue and reflection on Africa’s path to unity and development.
Notably, the second lecture in 2011 was delivered by the late President Benjamin Mkapa, under the theme Africa Day: Should it be Celebrated? while the 5th lecture in 2014 was presented by Salim Ahmed Salim, focusing on Defining the Leadership Paradigm for a New Africa.
The upcoming lecture marks only the second time the event is being held outside South Africa, the first being in Guinea in 2023.
As part of its sponsorship, GGML will support a roundtable discussion on the theme Aligning African Priorities: Expectations for South Africa’s G20 Presidency.
The session will bring together key stakeholders from public, private, and civil society sectors to discuss Africa’s strategic voice on the global stage.
“The Thabo Mbeki Foundation remains committed to advancing the African renaissance through platforms that promote dialogue, deepen unity, and foster a shared commitment to the continent’s self-set goals,” said the Thabo Mbeki Foundation.
“We are pleased to partner with institutions that share this vision,” it added.
GGML’s participation is part of the AngloGold Ashanti’s broader commitment to supporting African development and enriching conversations that shape the continent’s future.
“We are honoured to support the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and be part of such a historic occasion in Tanzania,” said Simon Shayo, Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs (Africa), AngloGold Ashanti.
“AngloGold Ashanti believes that private sector actors have a significant role to play in fostering inclusive dialogue and enabling platforms that advance Africa’s development objectives. Our support for this year’s Africa Day celebration reflects that conviction,” he added.
