Moshi. Fishing continues unabated at Nyumba ya Mungu dam in Mwanga district despite a recent ban by the government.

A survey by The Citizen showed that fish from the dam constructed over 50 years ago for hydro-electric power generation is still being sold in an open air market in Moshi municipality, popularly known as   Manyema.

Two months ago, authorities in Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions suspended fishing at Nyumba ya Mungu from July 1,  this year to June next year after it had emerged  that many fishermen had contravened the law, one of the manifestations being using small eyed nets to would catch small fish.

Contacted for comment Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner  Said Meck Sadik, said:

“I have not been notified of the alleged misdeeds, but I will make a follow-up and take appropriate action if I am satisfied that the law is being violated.”

Among other reasons, the fishing suspension is aimed at allowing for regeneration of fish.

Nyumba ya Mungu dam was constructed in the late 1960s for hydro-electric power generation. Although much of the water body is in Mwanga District it is bordered by Moshi and Simanjiro districts. The latter is in Manyara Region.
