As the opposition CUF sends its leaders to make a follow-up on the arrests of Kilwa South MP Suleiman Bungara (Bwege) and two others, the police force is being accused of moving them to the main police station in Lindi Region.
Dar es Salaam. The opposition CUF under its Secretary General, Maalim Seif Sharif, still struggles to bail out its three cadres including Kilwa South MP Suleiman Bungara aka Bwege after they were arrested on Tuesday in Kilwa District, Lindi District.
Besides MP Bwege, the others arrested are CUF Information and Communication Assistant Director Mbarala Maharagande and Kilwa District Council Chairman Abou Mjaka, who were arrested by police for holding a campaign meeting for a councillorship by election in the district.
Lindi Regional Police Commander could not be reached on his phone to speak over the matter as his phone was just calling without being received.
Speaking on the phone on November 22, the party’s director for elections, Shaweji Mketo, said until yesterday their cadres had not been questioned and that today they have been taken to Lindi Town, where it is not known what has made them to be taken there.
“Efforts are still being made to bail them out as some party leaders are already there for the same purpose including Juma Duni Haji and Kilwa North MP Vedasto Ngombale. We have heard today morning that they have been taken to Lindi Town,” said Mketo, adding,” We have sent our lawyer there to make a follow-up on the matter.”
Mketo has blamed police for suppressing the party with the aim of making it fail in the by-election, saying, however, that CUF is the most accepted party in the region.
“They have been arrested in a campaign meeting for a councillorship by-election after CUF councilors defected to CCM. Kilwa District Council Chairman Abou Mjaka was addressing on how he found the council and how it now looks like. After that, he was arrested,” said Mketo.
