Dodoma. More than 330 pupils out of 2408 who were selected to join secondary education in Mpwapwa district haven’t reported to their respective schools due to different reasons which include their parents’ poor education awareness.

Speaking to The Citizen, the District Acting Secondary Education officer Ms Frola Mkwama, said only 2073 pupils out of 2408 who were selected to join secondary education reported to their respective schools.

She said some pupils have failed to report to school because they have been forced to shift homes with their parents engaged in pastoralism. However, Ms Mkwama said some parents have enrolled their children to private schools.

On his part, acting Mpwapwa District Executive Director Mr Khomlo Njovu said poor education among some parents was among the reasons behind pupils’ failure to report to schools.

“Some pastoral communities in Mpwapwa District don’t see the importance of educating girls,” said Mr Njovu.

He said to address the problem, authorities and other stakeholders in the district have been conducting awareness training on the importance of education to those communities.

Mr Njovu also added that, the district council plans to enact by-laws to punish the parents who prevent their children from joining secondary education.
