Government injects Sh600 million into renovation of Moshi market

Moshi. The government has allocated Sh. 600 million for upgrading the Manyema market in Moshi municipality.

The market, at the terminal of a two- lane Mawenzi Road, is famous for the sale of fresh fish mostly from Nyumba-ya-Mungu dam.

Moshi Urban (CCM) MP Priscus Tarimo confirmed this, saying that the decaying structures of the facility would, indeed, be upgraded.

"The structures are to be massively rehabilitated this financial year. The market will have a new look," he told reporters here.

The project will ensure the environment is conducive for the traders to do their business and hence improve their well-being.

Mr Tarimo said Manyema market, the second largest in the municipality after the central market, had no overhead cover during rains.

The market was a centre of storm last year when there were reports that the fish traders in particular would be removed from the area.

However, this was rescinded by the municipal authorities following a quick intervention from the senior government officials.

Instead it was decided that the market should be massively rehabilitated and modernised to enable it to play its role effectively.

The Moshi municipal authority was directed to re-design the structures that needed rehabilitation.

According to the MP, this was conclusively done and that what was being awaited is money for the civil works to kick off.

Moshi municipality, clamouring for a city status, has several markets within the heart of town and on its fringes.

These include the Mbuyuni, which was recently upgraded by the traders operating there at a cost of Sh150 million they raised.

The market is famous for the sale of onions and vegetables and has attracted traders who were selling their wares on the road pavements.
