President Kikwete made the statement when speaking to former Nigerian president, Mr Goodluck Jonathan, who heads the Common Wealth observer mission and former Mozambique President Mr Armando Guebuza who heads AU mission at the statehouse today.
President Jakaya Kikwete has assured the Africa Union and the Common Wealth election observer mission that Sunday's election will be peaceful.
President Kikwete made the statement when speaking to former Nigerian president, Mr Goodluck Jonathan, who heads the Common Wealth observer mission and former Mozambique President Mr Armando Guebuza who heads AU mission at the statehouse today.
The President said since campaign rallies were conducted very peacefully he is optimistic that the election will be held just peacefully.
“I believe that this year's election will be held in a peaceful manner, even more than previous elections because campaigns were conducted very peaceful,” he told the two former presidents who paid him a courtesy call.
However, Mr Kikwete said despite his optimism the government and its organs will make sure that it will fulfill its responsibility of protecting wananchi and their properties.
On his part Mr Jonathan told President Kikwete that his team is comprised of political experts, journalists, youths as well as people with massive election knowledge.
Tanzania Human Rights and Good Governance Commission (THRGGC) have expressed its concerns over statement issued by various election stakeholders with regard to the ‘vote guarding controversy.’
In a statement issued by THRGGC chairman Mr Tom Nyanduga the Commission warns politicians, National Electoral Commission (NEC), police and other election supervision bodies such remarks might incite chaos during and after tomorrow election.
