Mwanza. Head of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Mwanza Region Ernest Makale on Monday, December 4 named four suspected CCM leaders, who were being interrogated after they were arrested for allegedly giving bribes during the party's election held on December 2 at Kirumba ground in Mwanza City.

It was alleged that the suspects were arrested in possession of Sh400,000, which they used to bribe various party members during the election process.

"The suspects are CCM leaders in Ukerewe District and they were arrested, while they were bribing members to vote for their favourite cadres," he said.

Among those named were two councillors, a party chairman and a secretary.

He said preliminary investigation indicated that one of the suspects was arrested, while in possession of a list indicating that he was given Sh1.3 million to distribute to various CCM members in the district.

Mr Makale noted that PCCB officers were earlier tipped off about corrupt practices, which were allegedly being conducted by CCM cadres vying for leadership positions during their party campaigns in the district.

He explained that investigation was still going on to identify who had sourced the money and for what purpose.

But he noted that the suspects were released on December 3 after fulfilling bail conditions, which wanted them to submit two sureties, who were either public servants or well-known businesspeople.

During the party's election, Dr Antony Diallo was re-elected as CCM chairman for Mwanza Region after getting 555 votes against Said Meck Sadick, who garnered 520 votes.
