PCCB probes Sh86.6 million project in Mwanza

Mwanza. The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Mwanza Region has launched investigations on a project worth Sh86.6 million after smelling the rot in its implementation.

Mwanza region acting PCCB head, Emmanuel Stenga named the project under investigation as construction of classrooms, toilet pits and a water well at Buhingo Primary School in Misungwi District.

“The project has been discovered to have irregularities, therefore we have opened an investigation file,” he said.

Addressing a press conference on the implementation of PCCB activities in the first quarter of 2019, Mr Stenga said PCCB had probed 20 development projects worth Sh23.3 billion in the region, five of which have been completed.

“Eight of these projects worth Sh3.9 billion are in the health sector, seven education projects worth Sh3.2 billion, one water project valued Sh2.1 billion  and other four construction  projects costing Sh13.9 billion,” he said.

Regarding corruption complaints, Mr Stenga said PCCB received 122 claims between January and March, 2019, noting that the judiciary tops with 20, followed by local government and education sectors with 18 and 14 contentions respectively.

According to him, the bureau received 11 claims involving police, 10 complaints against the lands department, natural resources and fisheries nine claims, health department, financial institutions and other private sector had seven, six and 9 complaints respectively.

He said at least 10 investigation files have been opened related to those complaints, noting that 12 are underway in various courts.
