Police investigate death of EAC business leader

Dar es Salaam. Police are investigating the death of the president of the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Ndibalema Mayanja.
Mayanja, who was a retired captain of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces, is said to have shot himself accidentally when he was cleaning his firearm at his Mbezi Afrikana home in the city.
However, Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Jumanne Murilo said the incident was being investigated to establish its real cause.
Family spokesman Gumbo Stephen told The Citizen that Ndibalema would be buried this week after the arrival of his relatives, most of whom live abroad.
“He will be buried on Tuesday, but this can change in accordance with the arrival of relatives, who are abroad, said he.
“What I can confirm is that Ndibalema will be laid to rest in Dar es Salaam.”
His bother speaks out
Mr Faustus Mayanja, Ndibalema’s younger brother, recalled the incident.
“We were at his house and he was cleaning the weapon with intention of returning it to police, before it suddenly went off. He died on the spot,” he said.
According to him, his brother had been sick and has been using a wheelchair.
Mayanja was also the chairman of East African Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture as well as board member of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation, Export Processing Zones Authority, National Construction Council and the Tanzania National Business Council.
